Pre-owned (used) cars only.
- Vehicle needs to be a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) or Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) noted on the HOV Eligibility list at the time of purchase *. See a list of eligible plug-in lorries here.
- Vehicle can be purchased or rented.
- Vehicle should remain registered to the candidate in California for a minimum of 20 months.
- Vehicle needs to be currently signed up to the candidate's PG&E residential service address.
- If approved, the rebate check will be sent by mail to the address listed on the car's registration card.

  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell automobiles and Compressed Natural Gas vehicles are not qualified.

    Applicant Eligibility

    - Application must be effectively sent within 180 days of the date of EV purchase or lease.
    - Applicant needs to be an active PG&E domestic electric consumer. PG&E gas-only residential customers who get electric service from a town are disqualified for the rebate. The service account does not have to be in the applicant's name to use.
    - Each PG&E consumer and each domestic household may receive only one PG&E Pre-Owned EV Rebate per qualified car
    - Each individual candidate might receive a rebate for a maximum of 3 various qualified vehicles for the life of the program.
    - A family, defined as the same domestic service address, may not send more than three rebate applications for cars bought or rented in a single calendar year.

    Submit an application within 180 days after purchasing or leasing a pre-owned EV to get either the Standard Rebate or Rebate Plus

    REBATE PLUS OPTION

    Customers who satisfy the PG&E Pre-Owned EV Rebate program requirements and are income-qualified might be eligible for the Rebate Plus option of $4,000.

    If an applicant satisfies all other program requirements and certifies under Eligibility Scenario 1 or Scenario 2 below, they might be qualified for the Rebate Plus alternative. If a candidate receives a rebate for the Standard alternative, the candidate may not apply once again later for the distinction between the Standard alternative and the Rebate Plus alternative, no matter income certifications at the time of (or after) the initial application.

    If another person claims the candidate as a dependent (for the federal income tax year used to validate candidate earnings eligibility) the applicant is not qualified for the Rebate Plus alternative, no matter the candidate's income or enrollment in a certifying public support program. Vehicles registered to a trust are not eligible for the Rebate Plus option.

    What documents need to be sent to make an application for the Rebate Plus alternative?

    Eligibility Scenario 1: Enrollment in a Qualified Public Assistance Program

    A candidate might receive the Rebate Plus option if they took part in, and can provide evidence of, registration for a minimum of among these public assistance programs on the date the vehicle was purchased or rented:

    - Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
    - CalFresh/SNAP (food stamps).
    - CalWorks (TANF)/ Tribal TANF.
    - Drive Clean in the San Joaquin Replace Program *.
    - Bay Area Clean Cars for All **.
    - Running Start Income Eligible (tribal only).
  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
    - Medi-Cal (income-qualified Medi-Cal only).
    - Medi-Cal for Families (Healthy Families A&B).
    - Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
    - Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
    To qualify, the candidate's name need to match that of the individual registered in the eligible public assistance program and the evidence of registration should be dated within 12 months of the application submission date. Applicants noted as a depending on their proof of public support documentation are not qualified for the Rebate Plus alternative. If an applicant is under the age of 18, extra documents will be asked for to verify dependency status.

    * Applicants with applications and supporting files submitted on or after June 13, 2023 might receive Rebate Plus by supplying their Drive Clean in the San Joaquin Replace Program approval letter that verifies their validated home earnings is 80% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI) for the candidate's county.

    ** Applicants with applications and supporting files sent on or after May 22, 2025 might certify for Rebate Plus by providing their Bay Area Clean Cars for All Program approval letter.

    Eligibility Scenario 2: Income Verification

    If the candidate's home meets the yearly gross earnings limitations for their household size and the county in PG& territory where the applicant lived when the lorry was acquired or rented, the applicant might certify for the Rebate Plus alternative:

    Household size includes the taxpayer( s) and any people who are declared as dependents on one federal earnings tax return. A tax family may include a partner and/or dependents. Individuals who live at the service address however who are not listed on the applicant's filed income tax return will not be included in the "household size" for rebate purposes.
    Household earnings is figured out by reviewing IRS income tax return transcripts. It includes the gross earnings of both taxable and non-taxable earnings sources of all household members ages 18 and older as shown on the most just recently filed tax return records offered within 2 years of the lorry's date of purchase or lease.
